Brick-and-mortar bowling shops have largely gone down the gutter, but there’s one in Madison Heights buying up competition and bucking industry trends.
Young Bowling & Trophy Supply, founded 70 years ago, might be the only store of its kind in metro Detroit, which is still home to one of bowling’s largest followings. To the best of Mike Lucich’s knowledge, he owns one of the last standalone bowling stores in the region. That’s because traditional stores are dying and bowling has lost its luster.
Tell this to Lucich, and he won’t entirely disagree. The trends are hard to dispute. However, inside the shop that the 67-year-old has looked after for nearly half a century, Lucich tells a brighter story about a small business that carved a niche, diversified and is thriving.
“I had people that said, ‘If he’s here two years, he’s lucky,'” Lucich said inside the 2,600-square-foot store at 720 W. 11 Mile Road. “Here I am 47 years later. Business is the best it’s ever been.”
